Southern islands tour

Tim woke up at 5.15, a good time to get ready for a photo-shoot of the fish market and some flying. It was a 45 min metro ride to get there, so when he arrived at 6.15 they were just setting up their stalls and getting ready for morning traffic. The light is perfect so Tim hurries in finding an open space to take off. The open quays on Google maps are filled with stalls so he has to walk to the end of the market for a big parking lot.

The light is good and being this close to the bay means the signal is relatively good so he can fly around the bay and shoot the fishing boats, harbour, the hill side housing and Busan tower.

After 30 minutes of flying it’s time to head back and shoot some more suffering or dead fishes. There are a wide array of animals on offer, many still alive in small water tanks, other being dried and others being gutted and prepared. But at least we didn’t get any stomach problems from eating fish like Tim got from the vegetarian Indian food that we ate yesterday.

We make and eat breakfast on the sunny terrace, what a life! Pack our stuff and leave our lovely apartment. Cleo and Zeno get a stuffed animal from the apartment owner.

At 9:45, we face the Busan traffic one last time, luckily it’s Saturday so it’s not that busy. Moreover, navigation is relatively easy as they coloured the driving lanes, so we just have to follow the blue lane and cannot get lost. Our destination is Jinju, but we take a detour via Geoje and other small southern islands.

On Geoje, we visit a POW camp, a prisoner of war camp for North-Korean and Chinese prisoners captured by the UN forces during the Korean war. It’s not as serious as the camps we have visited in Europe. First of all, because there are many attractions like a zip line, fun fair, photo booths, playgrounds, etc. Also, the story line of the park is that the prisoners were treated very well, fully in line with the Geneva convention, they got better food than the Korean soldiers and even education and support for their hobbies. Parts of the camp have been rebuild and there are different exhibitions with good English explanations.

We have a traditional Korean lunch with a barbecue, where all other babies also seem to be that we met in the museum. The children mainly eat rice.

Zeno and Cleo get stickers and enjoy themselves in the car to Hallyeohaesang National Park where we make a beautiful hike along the island mountain coast. Cleo is too tired to walk, she is carried in the Deuter by the strongest Dutch woman in South Korea. The scenery is stunning, with beautiful views of the many islands around us and reminds us of the Mediterranean, the fact that it’s sunny and 25+ degrees also helps.

We buy the best ice-creams ever at the grocery store when we’re back at the parking: litteraly a slice frozen mango on a stick. Genius!

As time progresses, we skip the other sites and take the final 1,5H drive to our motel to arrive at 17:30. We eat some soup and stews at the highway restaurant as this food is good and it’s very convenient.

We arrive at our Motel in Jinju at 18. The children play in the bath and big hotel room for two hours before going to bed at 20. Tim uses the golden hour to make some pictures of the fortress of Jinju and we sit in the dark as we have a hotel room once again…
